Bale, John
(1495–1563)
   Bishop, Polemicist and Historian.
   As a boy, Bale entered a Carmelite monastery and he was educated there and at the University of Cambridge. In his thirties, however, he left the order and became a determined Protestant. He was protected by Thomas cromwell, but was forced into exile between 1540 and 1547. With the accession of the Protestant King Edward VI he returned to England and in 1552 was consecrated to the Irish bishopric of Ossory. He spent Queen mary’s reign in the Netherlands and retired to Canterbury in 1559. He is chiefly remembered for his plays and for his Illustrium Majoris Britanniae Scriptorum, an important, if inaccurate, catalogue of British writers.
